Business protocol, Madeleine Albright

Business protocol, Madeleine Albright

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said that good protocol can be “an essential ingredient for business success.” The expanded edition of the Foreign Consuls Among Us: Local Bridges to Globalism (now available through major bookstores) incorporates that statement in one of its new chapters, the Business of America.

Consular functions include the furtherance of commercial and economic relations. Local consuls are a natural start for all trade- and business-related inquiries that target the country a foreign consul represents.

But, as the consul general of a major trading partner of the U.S. said to me: “Do your homework first.” This includes such matters of “protocol” as knowing what to call a consul and such basics as actually having the name of the target country correct!
