George Firestone

Secretary Firestone with Bok Hyung Lee, Consul General of Korea

The Foreign Consuls Among us is dedicated to George Firestone, Florida Secretary of State 1978-1987, who showed amazing prescience for the contribution of all the foreign consuls accredited in Florida. Not only did he initiate the first state-sponsored efforts to actively recruit these “Partners in Progress” for the promotion of the state’s international identity but, in 1980, he established the Florida Consular Corps Day during the legislative session in Tallahassee. The main focus of this successful annual event – the first among all states – was the shared goal of international understanding and goodwill by private businesses, state officials and the foreign consuls.

As an advocate for the arts, Mr. Firestone also recognized the impact of consular exchange in the area of cultural diplomacy.
