Consular alliances with economic and cultural communities

Consuls are often overlooked as natural allies with the economic and cultural communities in which they function. They are the natural bridges between the countries they represent and the states and cities that seek to expand globally.

Even when a consulate has specially designated trade officials, it’s expected that corporate representatives seeking business contacts abroad have done their homework so they understand the extent to which a consul can assist. Making a good first impression is always an advantage, and this includes basic knowledge of what it really means when someone is a “consul” or “trade commissioner” or is similarly designated at the consulate.

Fortunately, an increasing number of state and municipal officials now include consuls in their planned initiatives for expanding into global markets. Check with your local trade associations to learn more about the alliances they have already formed with the local consuls.
