Consuls: where business and culture meet

Consuls: where business and culture meet

The traditional functions of foreign consuls include their contributions to the development of commercial, economic, cultural and scientific relations between their countries and the United States. Many nations find innovative ways of showcasing their accomplishments in some or all of those areas.

Recently, I was very impressed to see what France continues to do in Miami. According to its consular announcement, during an intense annual “French Week” it sponsors more than twenty events, from all kinds of cultural programs to social and economic networking events. This leads to a strengthening of ties between many local and international partners such as economic organizations and cities.

But what we may often forget – although the French Consulate General in Miami does not – is that the result of these ties is a lasting connection with cultural institutions such as universities and schools, museums and art galleries, and more. Consuls are truly at the intersection of business and culture.
